Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Healthy latrine ownership is an essential component of basic sanitation and plays an important role in preventing environmental pollution and the transmission of fecal-borne diseases. Sungai Itik Village, Sadu Subdistrict, had a relatively low level of latrine ownership. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with healthy latrine ownership in Sungai Itik Village, Sadu Subdistrict, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, in 2021.

Methods: This was an observational study with a quantitative approach and a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in Sungai Itik Village, Sadu Subdistrict, in January 2021. The population consisted of 512 households, and 120 respondents were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test, while the association involving economic status was further analyzed using simple logistic regression.

Results: Of the 120 respondents, 56.7% did not own a healthy latrine. Poor knowledge was significantly associated with the lack of healthy latrine ownership (p < 0.001; PR = 41.294; 95% CI: 5.906–288.737). Economic status was also significantly associated with healthy latrine ownership (p < 0.001; PR = 3.138; 95% CI: 1.976–4.983). Furthermore, the availability of clean water (p = 0.017; PR = 3.441; 95% CI: 1.239–9.557) and the role of health workers (p < 0.001; PR = 2.159; 95% CI: 1.420–3.283) were significantly associated with healthy latrine ownership.

Conclusion: Knowledge, economic status, the availability of clean water, and the role of health workers were significantly associated with healthy latrine ownership in Sungai Itik Village. Efforts to improve healthy latrine ownership should focus on increasing community knowledge, supporting low-income households, improving access to clean water, and strengthening the role of health workers through health education, community empowerment, and continuous assistance
