Relationship patterns, Sustainable Palm Oil Certification and independent farmersAbstract
The RSPO or Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is a multistakeholder forum that developed a set of environmental and social principles and criteria which global palm oil companies have to comply with to produce certified sustainable palm oil as a form of commitment to mitigating environmental degradation, social conflicts and violation of human rights resulting from palm oil cultivation and processing. RSPO membership is composed of a large number of plantation companies, including PT Inti Indosawit Subur in Merlung Subdistrict. The research aims at looking into the relationship patterns the company is developing with independent farmers living around its operation to comply with RSPO’s Criteria 6.10, which provides that growers and mills deal fairly and transparently with smallholders and other local businesses, and with Criteria 6.11, which provides that growers and millers contribute to local sustainable development wherever appropriate. The research found out that the company has established relationships with independent farmers, both those who have implemented RSPO’s Principles and Criteria and those who have not. However, a significant difference exists between these two patterns in that the relationships with the former group is better. The difference was assessed using the T-Test.
