Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is still one of the most common conditions experienced by adolescents of reproductive age. Self-care when experiencing dysmenorrhea is important to pay attention to maintain reproductive health. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence self-care in adolescents with dysmenorrhea. An online survey-based cross-sectional study was conducted to identify factors that influence self-care when experiencing dysmenorrhea. The sampling technique used proportionate stratified random sampling with a sample size of 60 people. The Adolescent Dysmenorrheic Self-Care Scale (ADSCS) used the instrument, consisting of 40 statement items with four answer choices on a Likert scale. The statistical test was used to identify the relationship between variables, namely Pearson Correlation and Spearman Rho. The results showed that the average value of the ADSCS was 108.62 (SD 14.480), with the average of each indicator, namely seeking knowledge 12.6 (SD 2.026), emotional expression 16.6 (SD 3.385), seeking help 10.6 (SD 2.352), control over external factors 19 (SD 3.135), resource utilization 34.7 (SD 6851), and self-control 15 (SD 2.393). There is a relationship between age (p value 0.000; r 0.439), age at menarche (p value 0.000; r 0.439), information exposure (p value 0.011; r 0.324), source of information (p value 0.007; r 0.347), menstrual status (p value 0.000; r 0.463), and complaints during menstruation (p value 0.007; r 0.347) with self-care performed when experiencing dysmenorrhea. Understanding adolescent self-care behaviors and related factors can help identify potentially harmful or ineffective adolescent behaviors, so that appropriate management and education plans can be developed. Active participation of adolescents, health workers, schools, and parents is needed to maintain and maintain positive self-care behaviors when experiencing dysmenorrhea.
