Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to get an empirical picture of the effectiveness of peer counselor training programs to increase peer counselor skills when providing peer counseling also to get an empirical picture of the effectiveness of the peer counseling implementation guide module to help students solve their problems.
METHOD The number of participants in this study consisted of 21 students from several faculties at Jambi University, selected through interview. Program evaluation research design is part of field research conducted on the natural setting of the subject, in the sense that it is not an experiment placed in a laboratory. The data was collected by observing their micro skills in counseling role play, before and after the training. The statistical test that used is the Wilcoxon statistical test. The Wilcoxon test is a non-parametric statistical test to see the significant differences from two correlated samples.
RESULT Statistical tests showed that there were four participants’ micro skills significantly different after the training with a significance value of p < 0.005. Micro skills paraphrasing and giving open questions significantly increase, while the behavior of giving forced questions and directly giving solutions that should not be showed by the peer counselor decreased significantly. This significant change in skill is indeed the main focus of the research. Some other micro skills have not significantly changed after the training: attending, clarifying, perception checking, closed question, suggesting a solution, giving information, conclusions given by the counselee and conclusions given by the counselor.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS There were four counselor skills that differed significantly after the training, while eight other skills had not changed. For further research, experiment to more participants is needed. Improvements to the observation assessment method should be more effective and able to measure the variables appropriately. An evaluation at a higher stage is needed to see how the training impacts the counselee's satisfaction.
