Various efforts have been made to meet food needs in quantity and quality. Herbal products are part of functional food products that must be managed sustainably. On the other hand, the development of molecular biology has enormous potential to be applied in various fields, one of which is an effort to achieve food security. Nonetheless, molecular biology has implications for food security, particularly in managing herbal products. Therefore, a thorough study to identify the various application roles of molecular biology application on herbal plant product management supporting food security goal is essential.

Methods: This study adopts a literature review method with four basic steps: search, appraisal, synthesis, and analysis.

Results: Several studies showed that molecular biology techniques have been developed and used in herbal plant product management. Some of these are the use of molecular markers and DNA barcoding for medicinal plant identification and herbal product authentication, bioassay and gene expression analysis for understanding the use of plant metabolites in curing complex diseases, genetic engineering for plant-derived bioactive compounds production through plant tissue culture, et cetera. Besides, there are challenges following that potential, i.e., sample quality and quantity, genetic variability, method reliability, regulation and standards, community acceptance, and dependence on technology.

Conclusion: Based on the reviewed data, it is clear that molecular biology application has significant roles in herbal plant product management that will lead to sustainable food security through natural resource availability and economic improvement through several herbal product innovations and high production.
Sumarlina Sumarlina Tia Sofiani Napitupulu Copyright (c) 2023 Internasional Journal of Ethnomedichine and Nutraceutical 2024-01-25 2024-01-25 1 1 1 12 Antibacterial Activity Test of Jernang Resin Toothpaste (Daemonorops draco (Willd.) Blume) Against Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus Staphylococus aureus https://online-journal.unja.ac.id/ijen/article/view/29755
Jernang (Daemonorops draco (Willd.) is one of Indonesia's endemic plants that can be found in Jambi. Jernang contains the highest levels of dracorodin (red resin). Pharmacologically, Jernang resin contains flavonoids, polyphenols and triterpenoids which can kill and inhibit the growth of microorganisms. in the mouth against the bacteria Streptococcus mutans Lactobacillus acidophilus, Staphylococus aureus . Based on this, Jernang resin is used to make antibacterial toothpaste. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Jernang resin in toothpaste with various concentrations. In this study toothpaste was made into three formulas with jernang resin concentration 1% (FI), 2% (FII), 3% (FIII) Antibacterial activity test against Streptococcus mutans Lactobacillus acidophilus, Staphylococus aureus using well diffusion method. The results showed that the higher the concentration of Jernang resin, the ability as an antibacterial increased, where the diameter of the inhibitory power was greater. FIII with a concentration of 3% Jernang resin had antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans in the strong category with an inhibition diameter of 10.89 mm, against Staphylococcus aureus in the very strong category with an inhibition of 22.27 mm and against Lactobacillus acidophyllus with a very strong category of inhibition of 22.57 mm, so it can be concluded that FIII has better bacteriostatic power against Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus acidophyllus than Streptococcus mutans.
Uce Lestari Revis Asra Yusnelti Yusnelti Copyright (c) 2023 Internasional Journal of Ethnomedichine and Nutraceutical 2024-02-15 2024-02-15 1 1 13 24 Effectiveness Of The Combination Of Toothpaste Of Active Arang Of Sawit (Elaeis Guineensis J.) Ships With Allantoin On Gingivitis Of Chicken White Rats (Rattus Norvegicus) https://online-journal.unja.ac.id/ijen/article/view/31781
Gingivitis is found in smokers in the form of plaque containing tar compounds from cigarettes and the pile of bacteria is difficult to remove so that it will damage the soft tissues of the mouth and cause inflammation of the gums. Severe gingivitis is characterized by bleeding of the gums. The results of the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) in 2018 stated that the oral health problem experienced by the majority of the Indonesian population was swollen gums at 14%. Gingivitis treatment in smokers can be done using toothpaste with a combination of palm kernel shell activated charcoal and allantoin. This study aims to determine an effective toothpaste formula as a prevention of gingivitis in smokers and to evaluate toothpaste preparation formulas that have physical properties and stability in accordance with the parameters of toothpaste quality standards. Gingivitis toothpaste was made into 3 formulas with a concentration of palm kernel shell activated charcoal of 12% with a combination of allantoin 0% (F0), 1% (FI) and 2% (F2). The procedure stages in this study include preparation of toothpaste formulas, evaluation of physical properties and stability in storage, plaque formation and gingivitis, application of each treatment to test animals and measurement of plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI). Based on the results of the study, the formula obtained that has an influence in reducing the severity of gingivitis with a gingival index (GI) value of 0.3 (mild gingivitis) is F2 which has good physical properties and stability in storage compared to other formulas so it can be concluded that F2 has effectiveness as a preventive for gingivitis in smokers' teeth.
Uce Lestari Syamsurizal Syamsurizal Widya Nadia Herru Copyright (c) 2023 Internasional Journal of Ethnomedichine and Nutraceutical 2024-02-16 2024-02-16 1 1 25 35 Integrating Ethnomedicine Practices into Family Economic Education: Exploring Health and Economic Empowerment Synergies https://online-journal.unja.ac.id/ijen/article/view/32850
In many cultures, ethnomedicine practices have been integral to healthcare systems for centuries. This paper explores the potential synergies between integrating ethnomedicine practices into family economic education. Through a literature review methodology, we analyze the existing research to understand the intersections of health and economic empowerment within ethnomedicine practices. The findings suggest that incorporating ethnomedicine into family economic education can not only enhance health outcomes but also contribute to economic empowerment at the household level. This article discusses the implications of such integration and offers recommendations for future research and policy development.
Romi Kurniadi Copyright (c) 2024 Internasional Journal of Ethnomedichine and Nutraceutical 2024-04-29 2024-04-29 1 1 36 44
