Abstract

ABSTRACT
The objective of this research was to study the effect of green manure on the content of available soil water and soybean yield grown on Ultisol. The experiment was conducted in Village Mendalo Darat near the Research Farm of Faculty of Agriculture Jambi University from May until November 2009. Treatments consisted of control without green manure (C0), 5 ton/ha Pueraria javanica (C1), 10 ton/ha Pueraria javanica (C2), 5 ton/ha Calopogonium mucunoides (C3) and 10 ton/ha Calopogonium mucunoides (C4). The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with five replications.. The study results showed that the application of green manure improved the soil physical properties by increasing soil organic matter, total pores, available soil water and decreasing soil bulk density. In addition, soybean yield was increased by green manure application. Application of Pueraria javanica and Calopogonium mucunoides with dosages 5 ton/ha and 10 ton/ha increased available soil water and the highest results occurred with application of 10 ton/ha Pueraria javanica, while highest soybean yield was achieved by application of 10 ton/ha Calopogonium muconoides.
