POTENSI LAHAN GAMBUT INDONESIA UNTUK MENYIMPAN KARBON

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Peat lands in tropical region include that exists in Indonesia has important role in terrestrial carbon sink for conducting alteration of global climate change. It is caused by the widely and considerably deep of the peat land area (Organosol) in the Indonesia particularly in along costal areas of East Sumatera Island, West and South costal area of Kalimantan Islands and other region as well as in Papua (Irian Jaya).
This paper deal with potential of Indonesian peat as carbon sink. It is concluded that in this present time the total peat land areas in Indonesia is about 13.0 million ha with about 21.6 x 109 tones of carbon, and some part of them has been destroyed (2.4 million ha) by fire and other human activities. Utilization peat land using fire can produce green house gasses (GHG) , i.e. NOx, CH4, C2H6 and CO2. Three GHG mention in the front, very influence the global climate change.
