Abstract
The growing engagement of pesantren students with Japanese anime creates opportunities for connecting popular culture with contextual Arabic language learning. However, studies examining anime quotations specifically as linguistic and affective resources in Arabic instruction within pesantren remain limited. This study explores how anime quotations were integrated into contextual Arabic learning and how students who were familiar with anime perceived and responded to the learning experience. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving 60 third-year Tsanawiyah students from two classes at an Islamic boarding school. Data were collected through classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation during four thematic learning sessions conducted over one month. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while credibility was supported through source and technique triangulation and member checking. The findings reveal three interconnected themes: contextual understanding of Arabic vocabulary and expressions, affective engagement during classroom activities, and the negotiation of popular-cultural identity within the pesantren learning environment. Familiar anime quotations helped students relate Arabic expressions to recognizable narrative contexts and encouraged more active classroom participation. Rather than demonstrating causal effectiveness, the findings indicate that anime quotations can function as contextual linguistic resources and cultural bridges when pedagogically selected and aligned with Arabic learning objectives. This study contributes to discussions on culturally responsive and contextualized Arabic pedagogy in Islamic boarding schools.
